What type of ground (mulch, grass ,rock etc.) should I use for a child’s play area in my yard?

I'm out of a fenced area of my yard for a sabbiera, un'oscillazione, a table and a circle for my child. I'm definitely going to take the grass. What should I use as inclination? I heard the chips get moldy. align? The sand is dirty and no-no. The pebbles are hard on the knees? Not! Some ideas.

mulch would be good. But you might have to put new down every spring..

They have rubber mulch now, kind of pricey but you won’t have to replace it like other mulches.

You can get different kinds of pebbles and some of them are rounder on the edges. Like pond pebbles. They also have pea gravel which is very small rock that are rounded off like pebbles. Does you son like to put everything in his mouth? If he does you may not want gravel until he’s older.
Wood chips can get moldy if you have alot of rain. It doesn’t matter what you put down you will have to add alittle more each year due to it getting packed down.
You might want to read about the different kind of mulches; some the coloring will come off on your clothes; some of them repel certain bugs due to the smell(ie cedar pine etc)
They also have some that have weed stop mixed it and it will help kill off the grass underneath.

They have a great mulch for playgrounds that is made from ground up rubber tires. They use it on the childrens parks here. It’s good for the kids knees and a great way to recycle old tires.

The rubber tire mulch is the best if you can afford it. Otherwise there is a wood mulch specifically for playgrounds that is more finely shredded for safety.

I would use rubber mulch for a couple reasons. It comes in fun colors, it does not get ground into your shoes like sand, it is soft to fall on, and unlike a gravel, when the kids throw it at each other it would be less damaging. The only down side is the price, but it would last for a very long time even with breakdown from UV rays.

Yes, wood chips can get moldy. That’s how they decompose.
Gravel, even pea gravel can be very painful. I wouldn’t use it for a child’s area.
Maybe just a layer of landscape fabric stapled down? It seems good at the nursery.

Check out Home Depot and other places that sell garden supplies. There is a new product out now made from old tires. The company ‘mulches’ the tires and sells it in 25 or 50 lb bags. It does not attract insects, is a soft landing when little children fall and it comes in a variety of colors. I seen it last year for the first time at our County Fair. Good for the environment too, recycling the tires instead of landfilling them.
