How do you feel about Congress voting to raise cigarette taxes to pay for childrens health insurance?
September 30th, 2009 | by Michael |Nathan asked:
It will be 61 cents more a pack now. I just figured out on my calculator that this will cost me an extra $222.65 a year — if you smoke a pack a day that’s how much it will cost you too. I don’t know why they decided that smokers have to pay for this … what does this have to do with smoking? But it’s for “the children” What are your thoughts?

I am opposed to the government raising any taxes.
When we the people have a cash flow problem, we have to cut back on our spending. It is long past time for the government to do the same.
Unfortunately, it is easier for the government to rob the American people instead of acting responsibly.

They are also going to need more smokers to pay for this. I think i am just going to go to the Native American reservations to by my cigarettes from now on! No taxes on cigarettes there!!

I think it’s great. You don’t have to smoke…it’s a choice you make. If you don’t want to pay that money…quit.

I think it is great. I want all children to have medical attention. You should be happy to do you part in making this happen. I do feel sorry for anyone that smokes though.

they would get more money by taxing Liquor and Beer and Wine. But i guess Smokers should pay the price the Road drunks can still buy booze and run over children. Amazes me. The Senate are big drinkers I guess.

I think it is great, look how much is spent on health care for those smokers who are on medicaid and medicare. Children get sick from second hand smoke. I am not a smoker like you, but smoking is a right it is privilegde that all have to deal with! Cuz when you and all the other smokers exhale that crap we all have to suffer from the second hand smoke and the pollution it causes.

Feel like socialism yet? **** mongers and the intolerant will dance in the streets over this, but that shouldn’t be a surprise to you.
Like typical liberals they don’t understand that raising taxes decreases revenue.

I don’t think children should be allowed to smoke…
If it does what the Demonuts hope it will do,(force people to stop smoking) it will be a diminishing revenue base. Besides, they don’t smoke, so what better way to raise revenue? Personally, I’m all for a $2 a cup latte tax.

Cigarette companies slowly kill people. Their product is dangerous and they know it. Some good might as well come from the selling of cancer sticks. Who knows, maybe people will get fed up and quit.

taxes from cigs and alcohol have been used for schools and childrens programs for a long time.
Also, if you buy a lottery ticket a lot of that money goes towards similar.
It’s been happening for YEARS!

They are following what most states have done. Quit smoking and bank your savings. It’ll add up real quick and be a big nest egg.
By duchess_of_suspension on Oct 26, 2009 | Reply
Time to quit! You’ll feel better and smell better, too!

I think “sin” taxes, which is precisely what this is, are relics of the political past and have no place in todays society.
They do this sort of crap all the time and it ultimately winds up costing the government money because “x” number of people quit smoking, “y” number of people smoke less and that makes “z” the revenue expected to be gained from this decrease.
Gee…lets fund something with an ever shrinking pool of funds that we cannot depend on. Brilliant.
When will the government cut spending?

it’s stupid - raise taxes on something you are trying to get people to stop using. They are loosing their tax base when they do that.
By Nibbles on Oct 31, 2009 | Reply
I think it truly stinks…..Why don’t we just pick any group of people that do one thing and tax them for it.
I have a child and I’m a smoker.
I pay for my child’s health care..Not some company that provides it to me and certainly not the state.
If you can’t afford health care for your child…DON’T HAVE A CHILD!
The parents are responsible for their children…
I’m not responsible for anybody’s kids but my own.

It’s stupid.
But it’s what our society is turning into: charge “undesirables” for activities they do anyway to help pay for programs used by other people.

Look back to when Congress went after the tobacco companies in the 90’s all that money was to bring down health insurance cost to make it easier for everyone to get health insurance. I know that I did not get a decrease or a refund back then and now I can not afford the premiums so I am uninsured. Obama (what a waste of votes) does not care nor does he know what he is doing, if they get their way what will be next for them to tax, beer could be next, or fat foods, when will it stop? The next time they slap a hefty tax could be on your favorite product. No I am not a smoker I am against any tax hike what so ever.
By Mac on Nov 6, 2009 | Reply
It’s a revenue loser. No one wants to pay $7 bucks a pack for cigarettes. Well, maybe some die hards would. But most people would not. So instead of generating all of this revenue it will kill the tobacco industry. Which is probably the agenda all along.

I love the responses of some of these people who are against smoking. I have smoked for 19 yrs, and I am in excellent health. Obesity is also a very FAT drain on health care, and guess what, I lost weight, and still have not been a drain to society, and have you looked around lately on how heavy Americans are? This is just another form of discrimination. Just wait folkes until they start taxing something you do…then how much will YOU yell and whine?? I say start taxing sodas, and french fries, booze, and how about things like cosmetic surgeries such as nose jobs and ****** implants. The way some Americans feel about taxing one group of people is disgusting and its high time that everyone pay their fair share. I agree with some of the comments here, I have children and I managed to pay for their healthcare on my own. We need healthcare for EVERYONE..not just children. Especially when some of the new families are making more money then mine ever has.

I think that’s a great idea! Smokers destroy their own health and the health of the people around them, now at least they can help kids while doing that.
